Tropical Predicitons

2010-08-22-07:51:06-A new tropical depression, the sixth of the Atlantic hurricane season, has formed over the central Atlantic Ocean and could become a hurricane by Monday, the US National Hurricane Center said Saturday.

Tropical Depression Six currently packs winds of 45 kilometers (30 miles) per hour, is located 935 kilometers (580 miles) south of the Cape Verde Islands and is moving in a northwesterly direction at 15 kilometers (nine miles) per hour, the center said.

"There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect," it added.

However, it added, "some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and the depression could become a tropical storm tonight or tomorrow... and a hurricane by Monday."

There is a 70% chance a weather system in the eastern Atlantic Ocean could become a tropical cyclone in the coming days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in a report issued Monday.
"There is a high chance...70 percent...of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours," the report said.
It said the weather system was located about 875 miles (1,408 kilometers) east-northeast of the Leeward Islands as of about 2345 GMT Monday.
There is a medium chance--about 40%--that a separate weak low-pressure area off southwestern Florida in the Gulf of Mexico could become a tropical or subtropical cyclone within the next 48 hours, the center said.
NHC report: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo_atl.shtml. WEAK LOW PRESSURE AREA OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO...JUST
OFFSHORE OF THE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COAST...CONTINUES TO PRODUCE A
LARGE AREA OF DISORGANIZED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE
NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS...THE SOUTHERN FLORIDA PENINSULA AND FLORIDA
STRAITS...CUBA...AND THE SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO.  UPPER-LEVEL
WINDS ARE FORECAST TO BECOME A LITTLE MORE CONDUCIVE FOR
DEVELOPMENT OF THIS LOW OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS THE SYSTEM
MOVES WEST-NORTHWESTWARD AT 5 TO 10 MPH. THERE IS A MEDIUM CHANCE...
40 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL OR SUBTROPICAL
CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
